Community participation
The use of unskilled labour can not be emphasized enough as a solution to unemployment is an as
important subject as housing. Rapid urbanization due to low job opportunities in rural areas have
caused major housing problems in urbanised areas as well us a high level of unemployment due to
the unskilled workforce.
Direct Job opportunities
The APC Building system is ideal to be implemented by communities in rural areas. The
simplicity of the construction process eliminates general building errors for which the building
industry is well known for. In conjunction with this, and the fact that building materials can be
manufactured on site, a large amount of unskilled labourers can now be employed.
Indirect Job opportunities
Skilled labourers with artisan qualifications can now work in their home town instead of
moving closer to towns and cities with these labourers building an infrastructure in rural
communities that will promote entrepreneurship.
Community acceptance
APC Homes launched an independent market research campaign (see the report) to determine the
general acceptance of the APC building system within the different income classes of South Africa.
Housing categories included BNG, gap housing as well as high income housing up to R2.5 million.
We received an overwhelmingly positive response.
Thorough community acceptance was done within the ABSA International building competition and
accounted for 60% of the vote. (see the article in the June edition of Housing Southern Africa)
